Warehousing and logistics buildings

When stock volumes increase or a distribution centre needs a separate buffer area, covered space must work with the existing flow of goods. ARBENA plans clear span steel-framed fabric buildings around the products, racking, vehicles and available site.

The frame, access points and anchoring are configured for the location and local snow and wind loads. The building can be open, partly enclosed or fully enclosed according to the operation.

When your warehouse runs out of space before the lease does

More floor area alone does not solve a logistics bottleneck. Forklifts need safe travel routes, goods need appropriate storage conditions and trucks must be able to reach the gates without disrupting the existing operation.

A warehouse extension can support seasonal stock, finished goods, incoming materials or a separate dispatch area. Its position on the site and the transfer of goods between buildings should be considered before deciding on width and length.

How we solve it

We begin with the handling process rather than a catalogue floor area. The structure and the layout are then selected together.

Clear spans and racking layouts

An interior without intermediate columns leaves room for racking, pallet storage and handling aisles. We determine the usable height from the highest storage level and the actual lift height of the handling equipment. Rack loads remain a separate part of the floor and racking design.

Dock levellers, gates and traffic flow

Gable layout, sliding or overhead doors and service entrances depend on the vehicle routes. Where dock levellers or loading bays are needed, their interfaces, levels and civil works must be designed separately; they are not assumed to be part of every building.

What the ARBENA structure brings to the site

Column-free space

Flexible positions for storage zones, pallet racks and forklift routes.

Site-specific engineering

Steel frame and anchoring sized for the location, exposure and applicable snow and wind loads.

Enclosure options

Open, semi-open or enclosed configurations, with gates and cladding chosen for the goods.

Planned expansion

Building length can be adapted by bays; later extension is assessed against the original design and available land.

Typical parameters to define

Typical dimensions and features are established for the individual operation. The figures below are design inputs, not fixed product guarantees.

ParameterProject specification
Storage systemFloor stacking, pallet racks, big-bags or mixed-use buffer space.
Width and lengthClear span selected for aisles, pallets and manoeuvres; length adapted by structural bays.
Clear heightBased on racking, forklift mast height and the tallest vehicle or load.
EntrancesNumber, type and dimensions of gates defined by truck and forklift routes.
Base and anchoringPrepared ground, concrete slab or other engineered substrate where technically suitable.
Frame and coveringHX420 steel with Magnelis® protection in current solutions; PVC/PES membrane, normally 670 g/m² in the standard version.
Local actionsStructural configuration calculated for snow, wind and other applicable site requirements.

Where the building can be used

Seasonal overflow

Create covered space for temporary increases in stock without reorganising the whole warehouse.

Incoming materials

Separate deliveries and raw materials from production or packing areas.

Finished goods and dispatch

Protect packed products and arrange an accessible staging zone close to vehicle routes.

Project references

The right comparison is a completed building with similar vehicle access, storage method and site constraints. ARBENA project references can help you see how structural widths, entrances and concrete bases are used in different applications.

For a meaningful comparison, check the location, internal clearance and handling method rather than floor area alone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can the building accommodate pallet racking?

Yes, when the clear height, floor and internal circulation are planned for the racking system. The racks and their floor loads require their own verification.

Can we add gates or enclose the gables later?

This may be possible for a suitable configuration. If later enclosure is likely, the additional wind effects and connection details should be considered at the design stage.

Does the building need a concrete slab?

Not in every case. The anchoring system and the floor used by forklifts or trucks are separate design questions; both must be suitable for the site and the intended loads. Depending on the project, ground anchoring, concrete, asphalt or suitable wall and block supports may be considered; the anchoring is verified for the site.

How quickly can a logistics building be installed?

On-site assembly of smaller ARBENA buildings may take one or two working days in suitable conditions. The full schedule also includes engineering, manufacturing, delivery, site preparation and any permits; larger projects can take much longer. The timetable is agreed for each project.
